The family made chaff with a portable chaff-cutter: here we see them at work in the Hay Paddock. The chaff was made from oats grown on the farm and used to feed the cows and horses when feed was scarce. Sometimes it would be mixed with molasses or turnips as an extra treat for the cows. In the photo John Dewar feeds the oats into the cutter which was driven by a car engine mounted on a stand. The drum in the background hold water to cool the engine. Tom Pimm (a neighbour) and Tom Dewar are in charge of bagging the chaff; one daughter, Isabel, had the job of forking the oats down from the pile in the foreground and daughter Annette had to keep the oats up to her father.
