John (sometimes Jack) Dewar was born in Dunedin in 1909, Betty Cotton in 1908. They met in Broad Bay where Betty was working, and John was a keen yachtsman: they married in 1930. They had five children, and moved to the farm in Broad Bay about 1939, and lived there till John died in 1964. Betty sold the farm after his death and moved first into Frances Street. She died in 2001. The farm carried cows initially, but switched to sheep in the early 1950s. It also had two Clydesdale horse to help with the heavy work. The photo shows the house and cowbyre, with a dairy and tool shed attached.
