This house, at 10 Clearwater Street, is the oldest dwelling still in use in Broad Bay. The builder, John Styles, came with his wife, Rachel, and his two children, William and Sarah, to the Bay in 1856. They lived in a simple house/whare, but the family soon grew in number, so John had to build a second home - this one, with a timber floor, two outside chimneys and garret windows. These help to make the house stand out in the early photos in the exhibition. It was sold on when they left the Bay in 1878. It has been added to over the years, but the Styles home is still its centre.
