Broad Bay wharf: a brief history (part 1). Broad Bay's first jetty was built by local settlers in the 1870s, no doubt with some help from William Larnach, as Larnach used the Bay to off-load effects and materials in the building of his castle. Once off-loaded, these materials were transported up to the castle via Camp Road, then a bullock track, and still a popular public walking track. Early farmers also used the jetty to load produce for the journey to Dunedin. The Bay gradually became renowned as a destination for day-trippers, so developed as a holiday resort in the early 1900s, regattas being popular along with picnics.
