Broad Bay wharf a brief history (part 2)
During the early 1900s Dunedin's industrial and professional elite built substantial holiday homes along with private wharves, and the Bay became a showcase for classical crafts. The Bay became known as The Village, and after WWII, it was further developed as a residential suburb which has continued and expanded to the present day.
The first jetty was always an object of controversy, especially over who would be responsible for the construction and maintenance. There was also dissatisfaction with how far the public had to walk, and the lack of shelters and lighting. This was especially a problem when the long jetty was constructed in 1911 to accommodate the new, larger ferries.
