The Reverent Rutherford Waddell preaching in Knox Church, bought "Dreamthorpe" in 31 Waikana Street, Broad Bay in 1917. He had come to New Zealand in 1877 and took up his position at St Andrew's Church in 1878. He soon began working to help the poor and became famous for battling the system of "sweating" in Dunedin's clothing trade. In 1888 he wrote a sermon on "The sin of cheapness" and the starvation wages workers were being paid. The Newspapers took up the call and in 1890 he was a member of the Royal Commission to enquire into "sweating" throughout New Zealand. He died in 1932.
