'Moerangi' leaving Broad Bay for Portobello, in the early 1900s. In 1901 Archibald Weir Placed an order with Logan Bros of Auckland to build a launch with a marine oil engine, and licensed to carry 100 passengers. By October 1902 she was advertised to be running a passenger ferry sevice between Dunedin, Broad Bay and Portobello. By then her passenger license had been increased to 150. With limited accommodation below, most of the passengers were carried on the open deck, as the photograph shows. This could be quite pleasant in fine weather, no doubt. In bad weather passengers went below, leaving the master (at this time, Captain Andrews) at the wheel on the deck! On Saturdays and Sundays she was well patronised, one report stating that on one trip she carried 225 passengers, 90 of whom were crammed into the cabin accommodation. In 1903 she was widened to fit more passengers, and the downstairs saloon was enlarged to provide additional seating. She was sold several times untill 1909, when she came under the control of the Peninsula Ferry Company Ltd. She was used to maintain the harbour side service untill the arrival of the 'Waikana' in 1909 and the 'Waireka' in 1910. She is now plying the waters around Auckland as a launch.
