Fred Bayne's first bus, operating as the Peninsula Motor Service, taken in 1923. The passengers were protected by calico sides, but the driver sat in the open front.
After the lower road reached Portobello, the first public transport ‘coaches’ were horse-drawn. A motor bus was eventually run by J Malcolm from Macandrew Bay to Dunedin at the beginning of the 1920s, using a 16-seater International. This caused FV (Fred) Bayne to start out in direct competition, driving a Ford of similar size.
